Ophthalmology
Ophthalmology is the medical specialty focused on diagnosing and treating eye conditions that affect vision, comfort, and overall eye health. Our ophthalmology services focus on preserving and restoring your vision through expert surgical care. Your vision plays a critical role in your overall health, safety, and independence. That’s why we partner closely with your eye doctor to coordinate surgical care when needed, using advanced techniques that restore function and improve quality of life.
In many ways, the eyes are a key indicator of your overall health and wellness. Seeing an ophthalmologist regularly can help ensure that your vision and your overall health are in good shape. Regular screenings can help detect problems early, making treatment generally more effective and efficient.
In some cases, outpatient eye surgery is needed to treat serious eye conditions such as cataracts, retinal disorders, or blocked tear ducts..

Ophthalmology Surgery Performed at Mason City Surgery Center
Many eye disorders and diseases require surgical treatment to be successfully addressed. Our board-certified surgeons at Mason City Surgery Center perform a variety of ophthalmic treatments and outpatient procedures for our Mason City, IA, area patients. These surgical procedures include the following and much more:
- Cataract surgery: Cataract surgery is typically required because the lenses in your eyes can begin to warp and change as you age, dramatically impacting your vision. Cataract surgery removes and replaces these lenses with new ones.
- Retina Surgery: Retinal conditions such as tears, detachment, or diabetic retinopathy may require surgical repair. Our surgeons perform select retina procedures with a focus on preserving vision and preventing further complications.
- Blepharoplasty: As you age, excess tissue may form around the eyelids, obstructing your vision. This procedure can surgically remove that tissue, improving your field of view.
- Nasal Lacrimal Duct Probing: When ducts are blocked, tears and other fluids cannot drain properly. This minimally invasive procedure can help to remove blockages and encourage normal flow.
- Chalazion Removal: If these eyelid cysts do not resolve themselves within the span of roughly three weeks, they may need to be surgically removed. The incision itself will usually heal within 7 days or so.
- Temporal Artery Biopsy: In some cases, patients may need to have their arteries tested for specific types of inflammation. To facilitate this, a small portion of the artery is removed and sent to a lab. These surgical biopsies are performed on an outpatient basis.
- And Much More
When performed at Mason City Surgery Center, these ophthalmic surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis, so you’ll be able to return home the same day as your procedure. Your surgeon will provide you with the preparation and recovery instructions you need to follow, so you’ll understand how to best take care of your vision health every step of the way.
What’s the Difference Between Ophthalmology and Optometry?
Many people wonder what the difference between an ophthalmologist and an optometrist is, especially when it comes to what patients can expect. Patients will see an optometrist for help with corrective lenses (such as glasses) and for basic visual screenings. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who performs eye surgery and manages serious conditions, disorders, diseases, and injuries.
